Ideas about Projects that a national organization may catalyze
(Contact Jim or the person noted for more details on any of these)
Michelle:
Creating some sort of umbrella "seal of approval" that local or regional projects can be affiliated with; the idea is both to keep an ongoing dialogue among local AE activities, and to raise awareness of a national organization. Perhaps do a quarterly dialogue about upcoming projects, and decide which fit the ASAE umbrella. Could be a way to get started with our networking as the overall shape of the national organization comes together.
Dave:
Day without Sound-installation or web experience; start with full soundscape, gradually remove them to show importance of sound
Citizen Soundscape Monitoring
Heritage Sound Project - oral history, tape archive? Seeking people's memories of the U.S. soundscapes that have been most important in their lives, and posting this on our web site (depending on the quality of the submissions, I could see a book project arising out of this)
20 Most Endangered U.S. Soundscapes, along the lines of similar lists prepared for national parks and American rivers; could publish a list every year and get some publicity that way, as well as increase awareness about soundscape preservation for environmental, cultural, and other reasons
Syllabi development/Curriculum archive
Nigel:
100 Soundscapes of America project - public nominations, choices made by ASAE (models are similar projects in Japan (complete), Finland and UK (underway).
Jim:
Create a committee of acoustic ecology experts that can offer input to public and private land managers on AE issues.
News Digest and press outreach to place AE stories in the mainstream media
